Can you have Coffee if you are pregnant? | Caffeine in Pregnancy?

hi everyone i'm amrita and today's video is about caffeine intake during pregnancy coffee is a very popular drink in the general population and is normally associated with the stimulant caffeine in fact when you combine both tea and coffee consumption caffeine is the most common stimulant consumed just drink i like it while tea and coffee are common sources some caffeine is also found in some chocolate products cocoa soft drinks and energy drinks like redwood caffeine is also a commonly used ingredient in some medications that are prescribed for colds headaches menstrual pains weight loss etc so is caffeine safe to consume if you are pregnant and why is there a concern to begin with [Music] so some research many many years ago showed that high levels of caffeine intake this was levels that above 300 milligrams of caffeine were associated with an increased risk of miscarriages as well as reduction in the growth of the fetus the research also showed that at high levels of caffeine consumption there was reduced flow of blood across the placenta which is not great because this is the main way that the baby the growing baby gets its oxygen and nutrients so keeping this research in mind they reviewed the evidence and current guidelines state that pregnant women as well as women planning to conceive should consume no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine from all sources it was determined that at this level there is no increased risk for miscarriage as well as for any kind of fetal defects now just to put this in perspective one cup of coffee has about 100 milligrams of caffeine of course the exact amount depends on how strong or weak your coffee is brewed coffee by far has the largest amount of caffeine among all the drinks with black tea coming in at 20 to 30 milligrams of caffeine per cup of tea keeping these values in mind it's safe to say that you can consume one to two cups of coffee a day if you are pregnant the exact amount of cost differs and you should check with your healthcare provider or doctor or dietitian before consuming coffee now i know i just gave you a whole bunch of scary research about caffeine during pregnancy but some research has also found benefits of consuming caffeine when you are pregnant it's a well-known fact that some amount of caffeine can help prevent or can help improve diabetes and this research too found that consuming about 100 milligrams of caffeine can prevent the development of gestational diabetes or diabetes during pregnancy tea and coffee contain certain antioxidants which are thought to reduce inflammation and insulin resistance and in this way they help reduce the risk for gestational diabetes so what's the verdict well if you don't or didn't ever consume tea or coffee there's certainly no need to start doing so even if you're at an increased risk for gestational diabetes if you did regularly consume coffee now limited to about one to two cups after speaking to your healthcare provider doctor or dietitian alternately you can also choose decaffeinated teas and coffees they still have some caffeine in them but the amounts are very negative that's all for today i hope you enjoyed this video and found it helpful if you did please remember to like share and subscribe to my channel and share this video with others who will also find it helpful if you have any questions or concerns please leave them in the comments below or reach out to me on instagram i hope to hear from you very soon until then take care
